Connect Ontario is the Knowledge Ontario project focused on transforming the Library catalogue from an inventory finding system… to a rich, discovery experience and a kaleidoscope of social spaces that are defined by shared interests by topic, genre, and style.
About In 2007 Knowledge Ontario, together with the Provincial Library Services Branch of British Columbia entered into a ground-breaking Charter Subscriber agreement with BiblioCommons.
This agreement, in its first phase, provides all Public Libraries in these provinces with the possibility of a complete replacement for the library’s “Online Public Access Catalogue, including industry-leading implementations of all core OPAC functionality
Faceted navigation
Patron authentication and account management functionality (holds, renewals, etc)
Outbound notifications (email, text message) for user-specified messaging
Links to enhanced content for bibliographic records from a variety of supplemental sources
In addition, the Connect Ontario services will add an interactive, social layer to the OPAC that will:
Enable Patrons of public libraries to:
rate, review, categorize, and build lists around the library’s collections
specify privacy settings
build networks of favorite reviewers that subsequently feed personalized recommendations and search processes
connect and communicate with other users with similar interests in a safe, trusted environments
Aggregate (across all participating library systems)
all community-contributed content, and share it back across participating libraries, such that all libraries, big and small, have access to a critical mass of user (and librarian) opinion, and annotation.
All bibliographic records, allowing users to search and view current availability across multiple systems, from a single search.
Incorporate all community-contributed content back into sophisticated search, browse and recommendation functionality.
Seamlessly integrate with the library’s existing cataloging and circulation management system, leveraging the library’s existing technology investments. Staff support requirements are also minimal.
